Belmont Lofts
This project began with a hundred-year-old foursquare and a less-than-loved 1960s apartment addition. MZA was contracted to maintain the character of the old home while brushing aside the outdated addition for eight new city lofts. The twist? Developing something new and contemporary that still preserved the rhythm of the neighborhood. MZA worked with the Metro Historical Commission and potential residents to craft unique floor plans and personal details for each of the 1,600-square-foot lofts. The addition features cantilevering stairways, steel doors, and a surprise meditation balcony, details that balance form and function. The result is a considered and innovative model for infill construction in historic districts: respectful of tradition, but unapologetically modern.
