Testimonials

“I have been working with MZA since 2004 on both personal and professional projects. Most recently, MZA designed the renovation of my 95-year-old house in Pound Ridge, NY, a project set to be completed by the end of 2024. The design required exceptional attention to detail to limit the scope of work and avoid triggering compliance with current zoning codes, which would have necessitated the demolition of the historic structure. MZA developed innovative solutions to reframe the existing structure and roof, extend the house by several feet, reconstruct the garage and its “connector” to the main house, replace windows, refinish the exterior, and add a stunning ridge skylight to the living room.

Previously, I collaborated with MZA on restoring the exterior of a 1900 brownstone in Greenwich Village, NYC, and converting the former single-room-occupancy building into a triplex, single-family home. MZA’s strong rapport with NYC’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) was instrumental in creating designs that enhanced the building while meeting LPC’s stringent requirements. Their expertise also ensured the timely acquisition of the necessary approvals. This project faced tight budgetary and scheduling constraints, as the building remained partially occupied throughout much of the work. MZA worked seamlessly with my contractor, providing invaluable resources for cabinetmaking, finishes, hardware, plumbing, and lighting to accelerate the project timeline.”

“Our family has worked with Manuel Zeitlin Architects (MZA)  in a variety of capacities since 2004, and with managing partner Mark Bixler since 1999.  Mark and his team have been part of the design and renovation of three of our homes.

About 8 years ago our family acquired a 1915 home in New Jersey which had been partially renovated a few years prior to our ownership. We again contacted MZA to assist with the redesign of an overly ornate kitchen, addition of a mudroom, reorganization of the primary suite and finishing the unfinished basement as a home gym, den, wine room, bathrooms and storage space. MZA designed a contemporary side porch facing our newly renovated pool which complements the 100+ year old home without trying to match it.  Finally, MZA’s design for the reconstruction of the existing pier/dock proved to be one of the most difficult and rewarding components of the project. Extending 110’ into the Navesink River, MZA designed a new pier, as well as a series of stairs and platforms to climb back up to the house. The materials MZA selected (ipe, greenheart and aluminum) ensured the pier would last for several more generations.

I wholeheartedly recommend MZA for any complex historic project and will continue to rely on them for my family’s future work.”
